Clara's Overnight Salad

1 (20 ounce) can pineapple chunks
2 cups seedless grapes
2 cups marshmallows
1 can mandarin oranges
1/2 cup maraschino cherries
2 eggs yolks
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon corn starch
1 cup whipped cream
nuts (walnuts, pecans, or almonds) (optional)

Drain the pineapple, save the liquid. In a large saucepan put the pineapple juice, egg yolks, sugar, salt, butter and corn starch. Bring to a boil over low heat stirring constantly until thickened. Cool. When cool, add whipped cream. In a bowl mix the pineapple, grapes, marshmallows and mandarin oranges. Pour the pineapple juice mixture over the fruit. Garnish with the maraschino cherries. Nuts may be added to the top. Chill for 24 hours.
