Fudge Bars

1/2 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups oatmeal
1/2 cups nuts (of your choice and optional)

Filing:
1 cup chocolate chips
2 tablespoons butter
3/4 cup condensed milk
1/4 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

1. In a large bowl cream the shortening and sugar, beat until fluffy.

2. Beat in the egg and vanilla.

3. Stir in the flour, baking soda and salt, mix well.

4. Stir in the oatmeal and the nuts.

5. Remove half of mixture for topping, set aside.

6. Press remainder into a 9 x 13 inch pan.

7. Put the chocolate chips, butter, milk and salt in a saucepan.

8. Heat on low until the chips are melted.

9. Pour onto crust

10. Put reserved dough between two pieces of waxed paper and roll out to size of pan - 9 x 13.

11. Place rolled out dough on top of chocolate chip filling.

12. Bake in preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes.

13. Cool then cut into bars.
