Hannah Davis Baked Apple Crunch
Hannah Davis is referred to as the first widow of the American Revolutionary War. Her husband, Captain Isaac Davis, was felled by the first Redcoat shots at Concord. A direct descendant of Captain Davis brought this recipe to the Old 76 House restaurant in New York City.
Filling:
2 pounds Granny Smith apples
2 1/2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
A Simple Crunch:
1/2 cup flour
4 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease either an 8 or 9 inch pie plate or an 8 x 8 inch baking pan.
1. Wash, peel and core apples slicing them into small half moons.
2. Place the apple sections into a large mixing bowl. Slowly add the sugar,
cinnamon and cloves.
3. Make sure the apples are fully coated with the spice mixture.
4. Pour them into an 8 or 9 inch pie plate or 8 x 8 baking pan.
5. Place the Crunch mix ingredients in a large bowl. Work the ingredients
through your fingers until well mixed.
6. Sprinkle the Crunch over the apples.
7. Bake for 60 minutes. Top will be a dark golden brown.
8. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve warm.
